Outdoor Movie Night: The Ultimate Camping & Backyard Setup

Couple having an outdoor movie night while camping. Kissing in front of the screen
Best Kind of Date Night!!!

There's nothing quite like watching your favorite movie under the stars. Whether you're deep in the backcountry or just setting up shop in the backyard, an outdoor movie night

is one of the easiest ways to turn an ordinary evening into a memory.

Fall is the BEST season for this because its still warm but the sun is going down a lot sooner!

Here's our full setup, tried, tested, and approved for both camping trips and driveway hangouts.

See the shop-able list below on ShopMy:

The Screen & Projector

Lumi Projector This is the heart of the whole setup. It's a smart projector that connects to your favorite streaming apps, but here's the catch, you'll need internet to stream live. Our workaround? Download your movies ahead of time so you're not at the mercy of spotty service.

Lumi Screen Pair it with a portable screen and you're in business. We string ours up with a bit of paracord, tied to our camper on one end, or between two trees. At home, it works just as well hung from a fence or the side of the house.

You could also just use a sheet for the budget version. We like the screen because its better quality image and easier to hang up.

Power

Jackery Power Bank For camping, this is non-negotiable. It keeps the projector (and everything else) running without needing to be near an outlet. If you're doing movie night at home, skip the power bank altogether and just run an extension cord out to your setup.

Internet (Optional)

If you're streaming live or forgot to download your movie ahead of time, you'll need a connection. We rely on Starlink for this when we're off-grid, it's been a game changer for camping in general, not just movie nights. If you've already got your film downloaded, though, feel free to skip this entirely.

Sound

Bluetooth Speaker Almost any Bluetooth speaker will do the trick, but we're partial to our Turtlebox, it's loud, durable, and built for the outdoors.

Seating & Setup

Portable Outdoors Foldable Table Needed to set the projector up on also great for holding snacks, drinks, or your speaker setup.

Camp Chairs We swap out traditional camp chairs for our Portal Outdoor hammock chairs: comfy, easy to pack, and perfect for lounging through a two-hour movie.

Blankets Once the sun goes down, temperatures drop fast. We're big fans of Rumpl blankets. Cozy, packable, and durable enough for years of movie nights.

Camping Mat: We love laying down a large camping mat to make it feel more like a living room in the outdoors!

The Finishing Touches

Solar-Powered Twinkle Lights Not necessary, but if you want to set the mood extra romantic (wink), string some solar-powered twinkle lights around your setup. They charge during the day and add just the right glow once the movie starts.

Snacks!! Obviously. No movie night is complete without them. Popcorn, candy, whatever your crew loves best.

The Full Gear List

Whether you're parked at a campsite or set up in your own backyard, this kit makes it easy to create a movie night that feels like an event. Grab your favorite film, get everything set up before the sun goes down, and enjoy the show.
